I’m a retired National Board Certified Teacher and librarian who spent most of my career putting just the right book into the hands of children and young adults. With experience as a school library media specialist, teacher of social studies and of English to speakers of other languages, and public librarian, I’ve spent nearly thirty years with young readers.
Having written numerous professional articles and grants, I’m now turning my focus to writing literary fiction for young adult readers.
I’m especially proud of my work advocating for high-needs schools at the local, state, national and international level, including serving on the NC Team at the National Strategy Forum on Supporting and Staffing High-Needs Schools. As the inaugural winner of the North Carolina Association of Educators Linda Rader Profession Opportunity Award, I traveled to Cape Town, South Africa, in 2008 to volunteer for a month in a high-needs school.
My husband and I are amateur wine-makers and enjoy hosting international high school exchange students. We maintain close ties to our children-for-a-year who have returned to their other parents in Chile, Italy, Denmark, and Belgium, as well as our shorter-term daughters from Germany, Argentina and Paraguay. We are also the parents of two grown children, a son and daughter. We are expecting our first grandchildren – twins! – in summer of 2015.
